North Shore Guide

Local tips for exploring the best of Oahu's North Shore β€” from beaches and food to activities and hidden gems. Skip the tourist traps, hit the good stuff.

🍽️ Food & Drinks

Ted's Bakery β†’

Classic North Shore stop. Get the hula pie β€” it's the thing. Also good for breakfast and lunch plates.

πŸ“ Sunset Beach area Β· 10 min west

PΕ«pΕ«kea Grill β†’

Local spot, not touristy. The poke is the move β€” fresh and well-seasoned.

πŸ“ PΕ«pΕ«kea Β· 12 min west

Kahuku Farms β†’

Farm-to-table vibes, beautiful outdoor seating. The papaya with ice cream scoop sounds weird, tastes amazing.

πŸ“ Kahuku Β· 10 min east Β· Thu–Mon 11am–4pm Β· Closed Tue & Wed

Kahuku Food Trucks β†’

Cluster of trucks famous for shrimp. Giovanni's is the OG garlic shrimp (expect a line). Fumi's is less touristy and just as good.

πŸ“ Kahuku Β· 12 min east

Haleiwa Joe's β†’

Fancier sit-down option in Haleiwa. Good for a nicer dinner β€” steak is solid.

πŸ“ Haleiwa Β· 25 min west

Surf n Salsa β†’

One of the few good Mexican spots on the island. Hawaii isn't known for Mexican food, so this is a find.

πŸ“ Haleiwa Β· 25 min west

HaleΚ»iwa Bowls β†’

Açaí bowls in the heart of Haleiwa town. Good post-beach fuel.

On-site at Turtle Bay Resort. Locals say it's actually legit (unlike some other Roy's locations). Great sunset dinner spot.

πŸ“ Turtle Bay Resort Β· walking distance

Aoki's Shave Ice β†’

The local pick for shave ice. Skip Matsumoto's (overrated, long lines) β€” Aoki's is just as good with shorter waits.

πŸ“ Haleiwa Β· 25 min west

Foodland Pupukea β†’

Not a restaurant, but their poke counter is legit β€” great for grabbing lunch or snacks.

πŸ“ PΕ«pΕ«kea Β· 10 min west

πŸ–οΈ Beaches

Kuilima Cove (Turtle Bay Beach) β†’

Walking distance from the condo. Protected cove = calm water for swimming. Super clean, not crowded. Best for easy beach days without driving.

πŸ“ Turtle Bay Β· walking distance

Kawela Bay β†’

Short walk from Turtle Bay. Fair beach at low tide, but the real draw is the flat trails for easy walking. Can walk to the stables and pet horses. Cool pillboxes at the point.

πŸ“ Turtle Bay Β· 5 min walk or 2 min drive east

Freddieland ⭐ β†’

Local spot β€” you won't see many tourists here. Incredible for sunset or lounging. Can have big shore break. Park on the makai (ocean) side of the road and walk through the gated community.

πŸ“ Sunset Beach area Β· 8 min west

Waimea Bay ⭐ β†’

One of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. Famous cliff jumping (when calm β€” rare in winter). Winter surf can be huge β€” incredible to watch. Get there early β€” parking fills fast.

πŸ“ Waimea Β· 15 min west

Laniakea Beach ("Turtle Beach") β†’

High chance of seeing sea turtles on the sand. Great for photos. Keep 10ft distance (it's the law). Worth a quick stop.

πŸ“ Between Waimea & Haleiwa Β· 20 min west

Pipeline / Ehukai Beach β†’

World-famous surf spot. In winter you'll see pros riding insane waves. Amazing to watch. Don't swim when waves are up.

πŸ“ Ehukai Β· 10 min west

Sunset Beach β†’

Another legendary surf break. Wide sandy beach, great for watching the power of the ocean in winter.

πŸ“ Sunset Beach Β· 7 min west

The stretch from Haleiwa to Turtle Bay β€” arguably the best beaches in the world. Pipeline, Sunset, Rocky Point, and more.

πŸ“ Entire North Shore coastline

Botanical garden with a 45ft waterfall you can swim in. Easy paved walk through lush gardens with cultural sites along the way.

Short hike (~1 mile round trip) with epic views of Pipeline and the North Shore coastline. Not too strenuous.

πŸ’‘ Pro Tips

β€’

Parking fills early at Waimea Bay and Pipeline β€” aim for before 9am on weekends

β€’

Check surf reports β€” helps you know which beaches are for watching vs swimming

β€’

Traffic on Kam Highway can be brutal, especially weekends heading back toward Honolulu

β€’

Gas up before heading to North Shore β€” cheaper in town

β€’

Sunsets face northwest β€” almost every North Shore beach has amazing sunsets

β€’

Winter weather: 70s-80s, occasional rain showers that usually pass quickly

❌ Skip These

β€’

Matsumoto's Shave Ice β€” overrated, long lines. Aoki's is better.

β€’

Swimming at Pipeline/Sunset in winter β€” just watch, don't get in when waves are big
